There’s money in naming rights

We feel important fundraising opportunities exist for Pitt-Johnstown that could be more aggresively pursued—allowing campus buildings to be named after donors.

Although we recognize that there are exceptions—including Owen Library, Biddle Hall, Krebs Hall, the John P. Murtha Center and the John  P. Murtha Engineering and Science Building—there is much unused inventory on which donors can attach their name to this campus.

The Student Union, Living Learning Center and Nursing and Health Sciences building are a few examples of opportunities for Pitt-Johnstown for fundraisers to encourage big donations.

This campus could use some extra cash, especially when Pitt’s funds maybe further delayed by the state government.

However, we stress that each campus building should be named after a different donor.

We cannot have everything on campus named after John Murtha, even though we recognize his extraordinary and productive efforts for Johnstown.

Freshmen dormitories could be renamed to recognize donors, since the trees they are named after  now produce oxygen and not cash for the campus community.

The Sport Center’s new gym floor has been named for the donor who made it financially possible.

Alumnus Rich Ragan gave money and, in return, the court was dubbed the Rich Ragan Family Court.

A room in Owen Library is dedicated to politician John Torquato and the Owen Sisters, Elvina and Sara.

The unused opportunities may shine a light on our fundraising prowess.

There are ways to obtain extra funds for the campus. We would like to see some unused opportunities be taken advantage of.
