Replacements need thought

Student Affairs Vice President Shawn Brooks has announced that he is to leave Pitt-Johnstown to accept the same position at Georgia College.

Brooks has worked at Pitt-Johnstown for five years, and throughout these five years, we have seen changes initiated or supported by him.

The one thing he brought to Pitt-Johnstown, according to Brooks, is that he improved communication among Student Affairs staff.

He is always approachable, and also always has a smile. He has always been cooperative and open to answering questions.

He supported us when some students were signing petitions to cut funding for the newspaper, and we appreciate it.

We would like to have him stay longer. He had shown some promise in revamping Greek organizations.

He also has proposed to refurnish the Student Union and add more Pitt-Johnstown characteristics, and said he aimed to create more of a sense of belonging among students, according to an article published in Sept. 11, 2013.

We are sad to see someone who truly cares about the students leave, and we hate to see the loss of someone who supports us.

But we are also concerned about what is to happen after he leaves. Institutions like Pitt-Johnstown are like a supertanker. Five years are not long enough to bring much change.

Not only is Brooks leaving, Institutional Advancement Vice President Mellissia Zanjani is also leaving after working at Pitt-Johnstown for only two years.

That means two of four vice presidents are leaving office this semester, and replacements will have to be found.

As always, we call for meaningful student representation on the committees changed with finding successors, particularly for the Student Affairs vice presidency.
