Integrity is valued; so is clarity

It’s budgeting season again.

What may already be a complex process for student organization members became more confusing after a discrepancy between budgeting guidelines that were communicated to organization leaders and the student government’s recent constitutional amendments.

At a Feb. 21 student government meeting, this discrepancy was discussed.

The amendments in the constitution concerning the budgeting process were added last semester under the current administration.

The guidelines given to students, however, did not match the already-adopted constitutional amendments. Intense debate followed about what should be done to fix the issue, not without assurance that this mix-up would not happen again.

Student government members did not deny that there was an issue, but instead said they were accountable for their actions. It is refreshing to see anyone demonstrate that type of responsibility when handling mistakes.

Additionally, we are glad to see that the process will reportedly remain congruent with the guidelines given at the informational budget meetings for this budgeting season.

We respect that student government members found a way to be faithful to what they told students. We understand that errors happen, however we expect that the senators who serve us in the student government association fully understand their duties—and can deliver.

We expect them to be aware of the details regarding a complicated process and be able to articulate those details to students who depend on their accuracy.

This requires senators and committee members to be vigilant in upholding their own constitutional provisions, even though it is susceptible to amendment.

We are glad that this issue was resolved with integrity, yet we hope that future confusion can be avoided.
